To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Let's Hear it...

So, apparently, not by choice, but more by force, I am a jack-of-all-trades at my office. As such, they have me do all sorts of stupid menial tasks which often make me want to respond with:

(1) "Would you like fries with that?"
or
(2) "It's a good thing I went to college so I could know how to do this!"

One of the more recent tasks the President of the company (Joe) asked me to do was figure out "what's wrong with my Ipod? I need you to fix it!"

Turns out I am brilliant! I plugged it in for an hour or so and whoa... it magically started working. I toyed with it long enough to realize that one of the 100 or so songs my 47-year-old, Hispanic boss, father of 3, grandfather of 3 (or 4 - I am still not sure about the last one) has in his Ipod is "Stars Go Blind" by Paris Hilton.

This fact, of course, humored me. And, I irreverently teased the man relentlessly for this. And, then I started thinking. There are a lot of songs in my Ipod that may seem deplorable selections to some, but not to me!

But, before I share these choice selections with all of you, I really want to hear the choice(s) you came up with from your own music selections. I truly believe that you can tell a lot about a person by figuring out what they might want to closet (or maybe should want to closet) by way of musical selection. So, let's hear it... and I'll tell you what that says about you!

the two albums in my itunes that don't match any of the other music styles I listen to are Justin Timberlake and Usher. I am almost embarassed to admit it, but I LOVE them both. Oh wise Ali, what could this mean? by the way, i am sick in my bed a third day. I went to work this morning and shortly after had to turn around and go back home. don't you feel sorry for me, seriously? Maybe JT's soothing voice will cheer me up.

Jen - My diagnosis. You are attracted to the leader of the "boy band" (so to speak). You find yourself attracted to cocky guys (with ridiculously hot bodies), who ocassionally leave behind there bros and brave a new adventure, perhaps one that involves someone like you. You think you'll fix them and turn them into soul-bearing monogamists. But, unfortunately, you find yourself a passing fancy. Because guys like that, never REALLY settle down.
The cure: listen to New Found Glory - "My Friends Over You."
- P.S. I am sorry you are still sick. Can I bring you some soup? Or at least some new chik flicks?

i'm not embarrassed by anything i have. and i have a lot. like 360gb worth of music (and counting). but people might be surprised by the compilation of songs from Sesame Street that i have. or umpteen Motorhead albums i have. or all the real hip hop i own. or Def Leppard's "Photograph" or any other member of my stellar 80's collection...the list goes on and on.

but that being said i don't have lame crap like Hilton. so i can hold my head high when anyone looks through my iPod.

oh, and most iPod problems can be resolved by actually charging the thing. way to figure that out.

Sesame Street? - Ok, I am nervous. Why could you possibly be listening to sesame street? What genre is that? I am checking the Megan's Law website for your picture! Where do you live again?

ali, it's true...i always pick guys who i already know will end up ditching me for some other girl. maybe i do it on purpose because i wouldn't want to be with them long term either, but realize that the ride will be fun while it lasts.
i'm not contagious anymore...i'm on drugs. if you aren't doing anything tonight maybe i could stop by for a few minutes. a chick flick could do me some good.

In no particular order:
The Carpenters
Believe by Cher
Hillary Duff's first album
John Denver
Rumors by Lindsay Lohan
The love song from The Mask of Zorro
Various Muppet, Sesame Street, and 80s cartoon theme songs
And most recently, thanks to you, If You Want to Be My Lover by the Spice Girls :)

why wouldn't you want Sesame Street music? you don't every now and then want to hear Captain Vegetable sing? or maybe count to 12 with the Pointer Sisters? and what category does it go into? children's music of course. what a silly question.

I am really not understanding the whole Seasame Street thing? Do you guys really listen to that over and over again?

Cher's believe, actually good to run to. Hilary Duff is actually a pretty good singer. But, don't ever see that movie she and her sister were in, it sucked. And, Lindsay Lohan... I love you Mindy, but that's up there with P. Hilton!

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa!
People are embarassed to have The Pointer Sisters and John Denver on their playlists?!? SHOW SOME RESPECT, people! These are the CLASSICS. Part of the FOUNDATION of SOUL and FOLK music. That's like saying that Neil Diamond isn't the greatest songwriter of our time!

I feel no shame. In anything. Ever. And I would never disrespect iPod- I love iPod for everything he is, everything he will be, and everything he will ever dream of becoming.

f*bomb, you should read people's comments before commenting on them. i am in no way embarrassed. the whole tenor of my various comments was about my total lack of embarrassment about what other people might think should embarrass me (and yes, there was an easier way to say that but i prefer it this way).

but i must correct you on another, more fundamental point. the pointer sisters are not a foundation of soul music. that honor goes to sam cooke, aretha franklin, and a few others (like ray charles and mahalia jackson). i'm not knocking the p-sisters, just putting history into perspective.

same goes for John Denver. i love the guy, but he's not a foundational representative of folk music. if there are foundational figures in folk music, we probably don't know them b/c they were never recorded. but if you want to talk foundations of modern folk music you have to cite Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and The Kingston Trio (to name a few).

and i'll proudly say that Neil Diamond isn't the greatest songwriter of our time. in fact, i'll say that i don't think he cracks the top 10. you heard me.

Rumors is really just a running song for me. Most of my embarrassing music falls into that genre.
Seymour--You have the Captain Vegetable song? I'm so jealous! Ali-- it's all about the happy childhood memories.

...ANDI dream of being Diana Ross, with my big afro and sequined ball gowns and classy hand choreography for EVERYTHING.

Take THAT, Seymour!

I actually got suckered into attending a Neil Diamond concert. I paid $100 to go with some friends. When he was singing his last song I leaned over to my friend and said "I am kind of sad that he didn't sing Margaritaville, that's my favorite Neil Diamond song!" - Yes, I NOW know that Jimmy Buffet sang that song... whatever, same thing!

At my 21st birthday party, my friends gave me the concert of a lifetime. When they covered one of my all-time favourite songs, I shouted out, "I LOVE JOHN DENVER!!!" To which EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the room turned to me and said, "Farrah, that's The Eagles."

Whatev. It's still rock n' roll to me.
